03/02/10 - BATs Badminton Club Raises the Game
A Badminton Club based in Bere Alston is all set to raise the standard of coaching in the area, with a little help from West Devon Borough Council.
BATs Badminton Club has been awarded £700 through the Council's Sports Grant scheme to take forward their plan to train young volunteers to become coaches at a number of levels, enabling them to take their skills out to other clubs in the area.
At the moment, there is little provision for badminton coaching across all ages and abilities, but with a number of clubs expressing an interest in gaining accreditation and developing into competition, quality coaching is a must. The volunteers will be trained to levels 1, 2 and 3 of the racquet sport, and be well able to provide the coaching needed for the individual clubs to realise their ambitions.
Hannah Colston, West Devon Borough Council's Sports Development Officer, said: “We aim to support our sports clubs in West Devon, and this year, 14 clubs have benefited with funding for things such as clocks for swimmers, and flood lights for pitches. This latest grant should help raise the profile and standard of badminton in our area.”
The first Badminton coaching course, at level 1, will take place in May, at Tavistock College. Anyone interested in taking part in the course, or becoming involved in sport in their area, should contact Hannah, on 01822 813628, or email hcolston@westdevon.gov.uk.
