Devon Local Government Review

The South Devon & Dartmoor Unitary Authority concept, called Putting Our Rural Communities First, has been submitted at the invitation of the Boundary Committee which has been tasked by Secretary of State for Local Government Hazel Blears to recommend an alternative local government arrangement for Devon.

Our concept is one of a dedicated rural unitary council covering the areas currently administered by South Hams District Council, Teignbridge District Council and West Devon Borough Council. It has been agreed by West Devon and South Hams Councillors and features within the concepts proposed by Teignbridge District Council. Our Members strongly endorse the need for a robust authority able to represent the interests of rural villages and market towns in South Devon and Dartmoor.

"These communities are at the very heart of the area and their specific needs and interests should be served by a local council which understands how unique they are."

Bluetongue and Avian Influenza

DEVON has been placed in a "Surveillance Zone" as a result of Defra confirming a case of Bluetongue in the Poole area of Dorset.

A new declaration was issued by Defra that extends the Protection and Surveillance zones currently in place in the country. There is no blanket ban on the movement of livestock but certain movement restrictions will come into force. Full details can be obtained via the Defra website at www.defra.gov.uk or by phoning its helpline on 08459 33 55 77.

For the latest information on avian influenza (bird flu), go to the Defra website.

Devon County Council's Trading Standards Service Farming Standards Animal Health Operations Centre is available to provide advice and assistance to the farming community. The Centre can be contacted on 08451 551999 and is open from 9am – 5pm Monday to Thursday, 9am to 4.30pm on Friday.
